Angel Island poetry is a precious legacy of American Asian American literature, and is now increasingly valued by the mainstream British and American literature and history. As a masterpiece of Chinese-language captivity of narrative, Angel Island’s poems not only depict the tragic experiences of laborers, but also reveal the plight of modern China when it was forced to join the global order dominated by Western powers. This paper analyzes the racialized nationalist thoughts and their historical backgrounds expressed in these poems and points out that: (1) the corresponding ideological position is the ideological tool Chinese laborers use to build their own identity and to understand the world; (2) By using the practical forms of traditional poetic style and establishing the collective subjectivity and heavy reading of the national hero list, Angel Island poetry becomes a discourse weapon used by Chinese immigrants who are trapped in shyness to inspire themselves, unite their ethnic groups and resist discrimination and persecution.
