High school, when asked what I wanted to do in the future, my answer was to be an architect. It sounds incredible, especially for a tenant son like me who grew up on a farm in Nebraska. Later I studied Architecture and earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska where I learned the idea of designing a building based on functional requirements rather than fashion. In my opinion, school time is not enough to let you learn how to design, but it is enough for you to learn to recognize what is a good design. 1959. I came to Olin County, California. It was a fast developing area at the time, so I was able to start a building design so young that it was unlikely for today’s young architects. My design for this period included the County Law Library, the first concrete building I designed that won the local AIA Honorable Mention.
