Although sleep (not to mention the performance of early modern literature) does not seem to be a topic of ecocriticism, the author of the article believes that it actually has an important connection with ecocriticism in several aspects. Sleep raises questions about the “human” boundaries and plays a “cross-border” role in the imagination of early modern literature. It questioned the daytime patterns of “nature ” in early modern man’s imagination and the consequences of imagining those non-compliance with these patterns. Not only that, but also the fact that people’s consideration of sleep almost invariably shows aversion to sleepless nights and darkness is conceptualized as a place of sin linked to nature has given rise to some reflections on racial issues. Finally, the authors suggest that there is some practical value in establishing a strategic thematic cue model of eco-criticism because, as we see in the exemplification of the relationship between sleep and ecocriticism, it can help to establish easily overlooked The concept of the foundation.
