太西煤的资源优势是客观存在,把这个资源优势转为产品优势、商品优势和经济优势,自治区人民政府已采取一些措施,比如:清理和整顿乱开的小煤窑,制止乱采滥挖行为;制定保护性开发的政策;积极组织矿区灭火;开展以太西煤为原料的深加工、精加工,开发新产品使其增值等。也就是说:通过对太西煤资源的合理开发、节约及有效的使用,使自治区财政增加收入,变成宁夏真正的效益和优势。但目前值得注意是太西煤使用上的浪费很大,据有关方面匡算,1987年宁夏产太西煤370万 t,用于出口约30万 t,冶金约110万 t,化肥及其他工业约140万 t,另约90万 t 做民用燃料烧掉了,
