This is the report of a plan by the Institute of Plant Breeding (Cambridge Institute of Plant Breeding, UK) to start producing and evaluating wheat hybrids using chemical hybridization. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the feasibility of producing wheat hybrids for the UK market. The institute has screened parents that are suitable for F 1 hybrids and compared their F 1 and F 2 hybrids to their parental lines and the most useful inbreds of the Recommended Catalog. In general, F_1 hybrids yield about 10% more yield than their highest yielding parents, with baker quality ranging between their parents; and as predicted by theory, the heterosis of F_2 begins to decrease. According to our test results, the minimum requirements for producing hybrid seeds of F_1 and F_2 are proposed.
