To stay competitive, Pan-Canadian companies have made significant investments in SCADA (monitoring and data acquisition) technology needed for natural gas production. To enable this technology to be used in well production, complete pilot experiments were conducted at Rockyford and Cavalier. The SCADA system is based on a PC and has a lower investment than other earlier systems. The purpose of the pilot experiment is to evaluate the technical and commercial value of the SCADA system. The implementation of new technologies inevitably has an impact on the company and its employees. A company’s convention and the investment of its employees are basically the hallmarks of its success. In order to fully utilize the potential of automation in the application of SCADA, a set of common operation mechanisms must be established. This mechanism can determine the purpose of automatic control. It includes common operating principles and automatic control strategies. Automatic control must meet all operating requirements. The real-time data obtained by the system also provide another commercial success for other users. In addition, the system requires hardware and software standards, communications and storage standards, services and technical support, and the system must be further developed to meet common needs in the future. This article will describe the pilot experiment, its completion process, and the integrated SCADA system required by the technology and organization.
