A potential marker for predicting when patients with HIV develop the disease may have been discovered. Researchers at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center (New York) say that the antiretrovirals in patients disappear 6 to 12 months prior to HIV or AIDS-related complex (ARC) in HIV-infected patients (Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme used to catalyze HIV replication). The team studied 16 patients with this virus but no clinical symptoms, 12 patients with AIDS or ARC and 8 seronegative controls. As a result, none of the eight controls showed an anti-retroviral antibody. The anti-retroviral antibody was present in 10 of 12 AIDS / ARC patients and 10 of 16 asymptomatic seropositive patients.
