In the face of the real challenges posed by the current defense budget cuts, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) is trying to capitalize on existing technologies that reduce costs and at the same time improve readiness. Reducing maintenance costs, system downtime and reliance on external technical representatives is a particularly significant exercise. This is the development of the MK92 MA92. This paper presents the design and development of the MK92 MAES for the diagnosis and repair of MK92 MOD2 fire control systems deployed on US Navy guided missile frigates. The system was developed in accordance with an expert system life cycle model that includes a complete cost / benefit analysis, a new approach to knowledge acquisition, a visible implementation strategy for an expert system development environment, and a phased deployment strategy. The system was developed jointly by researchers at the Naval Graduate School, graduate students and the Naval Operations Center.
