1980年在江苏省连云港市郊孔望山发现的石象系东汉摩崖造像,石象身高2.6米、长4.8米、宽3.5米,是我国迄今发现的最早的佛教石刻.孔望山位于连云港市锦屏山(古称朐山)的东北,在市区新埔南五里,高程129米,由花岗片麻岩构成.秦汉时期,孔望山一带就是经济文化繁荣之地.秦始皇35年曾立石朐界,为秦东门.朐山的西侧是秦汉朐县故址,西汉曾在这里设铁官.佛、道教的盛行,是产生孔望山佛教艺术的基础.孔望山摩崖造像在山的西南山崖上,东西长约17米,高约8米,石刻画像是依山崖的自然形势雕成,最大的石像高2米左右,造像可分为两类,浮雕和线雕,也有的是两者结合在一起.线雕是先凿出突出岩
