Film Aesthetics is a textbook written specifically for college students involved in the field of cinema research, with author Jacques Amon (associate professor of film aesthetics at Lyon II), Alan Belkala (film handbook editor and film director), Michelle Mali (Associate Professor of Cinema Semiotics, Director of the Film Department at the Third University of Paris) and Mark Werner (Instructor, National Institute of Education), France Fernand Nathan Press, 1983. There are four distinct features in this book. First, the author starts from the basic elements that form the film, discusses the film system step by step, and guides readers gradually to understand the whole composition of the film. Second, the book concisely covers the aesthetic issues of the discussion and controversy in western movie theorists. Third, the book infiltrates the spirit of cinema semiotics, focusing on the introduction of a number of areas of cinema semiotics, which helps to understand the new concepts of Western modern movie theory. Fourth, the author from the perspective of psychoanalysis Having a detailed discussion of audience appreciation psychology may be of some reference value for readers interested in studying and criticizing the application of Freudianism in film theory. As a preliminary study of the theory of film theory, “Film Aesthetics” may be read first.
