To observe the secretion of endothelin in the liver tissue and blood and the changes of glycocholic acid after bile duct obstruction in rats, and to explore the relationship between endothelin and glycocholic acid and to understand the role of endothelin in liver injury in experimental animals. Methods: The levels of endothelin in blood and liver tissues were observed by radioimmunoassay at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 days after biliary obstruction. The pathological changes of liver were observed by histopathological sections. Results Endothelin levels increased with time after obstructive jaundice and was positively correlated with elevated levels of glycocholate (P <0.01), indicating that endothelin may be one of the important factors involved in liver injury caused by obstructive jaundice
