释智首是隋代、唐初的戒律大师,是相州南派学的代表人物。其在隋唐佛教史的重要地位还由于其弟子道宣是唐代律宗的创立者。智首的事迹见于道宣所撰《续高僧传》卷二十三《唐京师弘福寺释智首传》,其中有云:“慕义门学共立高碑,勒于弘福寺门,许敬宗为文。”但一直未见著录,具体立碑时间也不详。1982年,《大唐弘福寺故上座首律师高德颂》碑(以下简称《弘福寺碑》)出土于西安市莲湖区丰禾路(位于唐修德坊西北隅弘福寺原址范围内)。此碑拓片2004年12月《碑林集刊》(十)已印出。此
