2003年11月3日,湖南衡阳市珠晖区宣亭村33号一栋八层四合院商住楼发生特大火灾。大约是在凌晨4:40分左右,该楼一楼大厅内有烟雾冒出,值班保安立即拨打119报警。不久,衡阳市消防支队的160多名官兵迅即赶到现场扑救。由于大厅内堆放的都是易燃品,所以火势上升得很快。8:30分左右,大厅内的火势越来越猛,楼上的一些房间也纷纷着火,消防官兵们控制了大厅外围的火势,并向深处挺进。就在他们全身心扑火时,意想不到的灾难降临了。8:37分,随着“轰”的一声巨响,该楼的东面、北面及西面的一小部分楼房突然倒塌,10多名正在里面扑火的消防官兵被掩在废墟之中,本次火灾中共有20名公安消防官兵英勇牺牲,举国震惊。湖南衡阳“11.3”特大火灾坍塌事故
