Since 1947, it has been noticed that the red tides on the Florida coast of the United States are caused by the short nudibranchs. Since then, people have intensified their observations and research on red tides, especially the red tides occurring in the Seto Inland Sea in Japan, arousing worldwide concern. In the 1970s, the average annual occurrence of red tides in the Seto Inland Sea was 326 times. In 1972 alone, 14 million tuna died and the economic loss was 71 billion yen. Since 1974, ecologists from all over the world and scholars from related disciplines have come together to conduct international discussions on the phenomenon of red tides.
