The Tujia ethnic people, mainly residing in the mountains of west Hunan and west Hubei provinces, have been surrounded by high mountains, flowing creeks, towering pines and green bamboo for generations. Leading a hunting and farming life, the Tujia have a long history of weaving cloth. Four thousand years ago, during the Xia Dynasty(C.2100—C.1600 B.C.), the Tujia used brocade as articles of tribute to the imperial flamily.
