日本和美国均报导过因食用霉变白薯而使牲畜死亡。研究证明这种毒素是由于霉菌侵入,白薯自身产生的代谢产物。牛食用了这种霉薯,食欲下降、呼吸增快而困难、肺部有湿罗音,数天后即死亡。病理检查可见肺湿而重、保持扩张状态、充血、切面如肝样、广泛肺气肿、肺水肿、肺泡璧增生及出血等病变。其他组织未见异常。现知白薯黑斑病菌(Cratocystis fimbriata)及茄病镰刀菌(Fusarium solani)可使白薯产生上述毒素。霉变白薯产生的有毒代谢物有:
Both Japan and the United States have reported the death of livestock due to moldy sweet potatoes. Studies have shown that this toxin is due to mold intrusion, the metabolites produced by the sweet potato itself. Cattle eat this moldy potato, loss of appetite, rapid and difficult breathing, the lungs have wet rales, died a few days later. Pathological examination showed that the lungs were wet and heavy, maintain the state of expansion, congestion, such as liver-like section, a wide range of emphysema, pulmonary edema, alveolar biopsy and bleeding and other lesions. No abnormalities in other organizations. Cotyledon pathogens (Cratocystis fimbriata) and Fusarium solani are known to cause the sweet potato to produce these toxins.
