The Land Operations Division of Australia′s Defence Science and Technology Organisation(DSTO)has developed an optical sight attachment for Australian forces that allows the shooter to view and fire at targets from behind cover.
Currently in initial production, the Off-Axis Viewing Device(OAVD)is a small viewing unit that mates with a weapon′s existing receive-mounted optical sight and provides an image of the target transmitted through the scope and reflected 50°to the line-of-sight back to the firer. This enables the head and upper torso to be removed away from the line of fire.
Australian forces will use the OAVD on the standard issue F88 Steyr5.56mm light support weapon and the M45.56mm carbine.
Developed specifically for dismounted operations in urban environments and the subject of a rapid acquisition by the Australian Army initiated early in 2005,the OAVD features longer-than-normal eye relief and permits the firer to scan a target from behind walls, obstacles and around corners.
lntended from the outset as an alternative to camera and display systems, which rely on battery power and are tethered by cables to the soldier, the OAVD is a standalone item designed to form part of a soldier′s standard toolkit by complementing the range of small arms attachments currently in use. As such, the OAVD, which weighs around 500 g and measures 150 mm in length, can be carried on webbing or left attached to the sight without impacting adversely on the weapon′s balance and handling.
Sealed from water and dust, and employing an optics system consisting of two oval-shaped mirrors to transmit the sight picture to the firer, the OAVD is designed to be intuitive to use and more accurate than electronic systems. A stable aiming and shooting posture is assumed by placing the butt of the rifle in the crook of the elbow and triangulating the position of the rifle to the body.
The OAVD is also able to be operated solely with the non-master hand and can be quickly disengaged(rotated away)from the main sight when not in use.
