The digital control of a quiescent power converter, such as a pulse-width-modulation (PWM) converter, enables precise waveform control by selectively eliminating unwanted harmonics in the load voltage and supply current and resolving interference issues. What’s more, software control has the big advantage of being able to provide a flexible system design that can be modified appropriately by just changing the memory or revising the program without changing the hardware. This paper presents a new system layout using microprocessor. The Multi-Function Thyristor Switch (UTS) is a versatile three-terminal switch with a trigger control circuit that includes a separate processor for turning on or off according to digital commands. Each switch unit can be used as a basic element of almost all types of power converters. A well-designed digital control feature can be fully implemented by introducing a hierarchical structure with a monitoring processor that communicates with a group of switches through a common memory. With the reduction of software development costs, the system has gained a great deal of freedom by using this multiprocessor arrangement.
