现代地质学发展的重要趋势是加强对地壳深层、上地幔或整个岩石圈演变的认识及研究地质作用的全球性规律,以满足人类对预测、寻找矿产资源和预测预报地震灾害的迫切需要。为了加速对现代地质学的研究,在充分利用原有地质和地球物理资料的基础上,1986年国际岩石圈委员会制定了开展全球性的地学断面研究工作。中国岩石圈计划全国委员会拟定在我国布设11条国际地学大断面,东沟—海城—林西—锡盟就是其中的一条。根据地学断面
