Philosamia cynthia ricini belongs to the non-hibernation multivoltine insects. Our researchhas found ways and methods to make it undergo hibernation. By letting the larvae passthrough “deep autamn-like” conditions and allowing the pupae to undergo “winter-like”conditions through 3 successive generations, we have succeeded in selecting a new strain ofP. cynthia ricini which can hibernate hi the forms of pupae in North China. The originalstrain is a subtropical, multivoltine and non-hibernating form. This kas laid the foundationof raising and rearing self-perpetuation P. cynthia ricini both inside and outside the GreatWall. At the same time, it may also pave the way for artificial induction of hibernation innon-hiberating nultivoltine insects.
