World leaders from all over the world gathered in Copenhagen in March this year. They expressed their commitment to eradicating poverty on our planet. They pledged to take decisive action and international cooperation in their own country. In this mission, they recognize the ethical, socio-political and economic obligations of humankind. The facts about poverty are now well known, but often overlooked. More than 1.3 billion people struggle to survive on less than a dollar a day. In the past five years, the number of poor people in the world has increased by 300 million. In 1990, the richest 20% of the world’s population earned 60 times more per capita income than the poorest 20%, up from 30 times the previous 30 years. More than 1 billion people lack the basic needs of safe water and sanitation. More than 3 million people die each year from preventable diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria.
