霍勒斯·尼科斯(1867~1941)在英国剑桥出生。后因他的父亲酷爱摄影举家搬迁至怀特岛并在那里开办摄影工作室。14岁时尼科斯开始为父亲打工,1884年离开家到哈德斯菲尔德的一家药店做学徒。由于热衷旅行,他于1892年离开英国远赴约翰内斯堡,这期间尼科斯成长为一名摄影师。1899年布尔战争爆发,他应邀成为出版于伦敦的期刊《南非(South Africa)》的正式摄影师。重返伦敦后尼科斯又成为一名自由的新闻摄影撰稿人,拍摄了大量爱德华时期社会活动和体育运动方面的盛典。第一次世界大战爆发后他加入了政府的信息部进行工作,战后他的作品数量大幅减少,更多的时间则与家人呆在一起。1941年尼科斯死于糖尿病。
Horace Nicos (1867 ~ 1941) was born in Cambridge, England. After his father was passionate about photography, he moved to the Isle of Wight and opened a photographic studio there. Nicos began working for his father when he was 14 and apprenticed at a pharmacy in Huddersfield in 1884. As a keen traveler, he left England for a visit to Johannesburg in 1892, during which Nikos grew to be a photographer. The Boer War broke out in 1899 and he was invited to become an official photographer in the London-based journal South Africa. Upon returning to London, Nicos became a freelance journalist for photography, photographing a large number of Edwardian social events and sports events. After the outbreak of World War I, he joined the government information department to work. After the war, the number of his works was significantly reduced and more time spent with his family. Nikos died of diabetes in 1941.
