根据美国钻进月刊的统计数字和文章报导，美国石油钻探工作随着全国的经济危机，正在走着下坡路，全国开动的旋转钻机平均台数自1956年开始一直在下降，到1959年1月26号，开动的旋转钻机平均台数比1955年减少了36.2％，比十年前的1949年还少303台，1957年开动的钻机平均比1956年减少7.3％，而1958年比1957年又减少20.4％（详见表1）。所以，美国石油钻探事业在1958年遭到的危机是15年来最严重的一次，并且遭到了种种难以解决的问题。
