In the novel, Hawthorne introspected the social hot issues of the time and was full of profound political connotations. The rapid development of social economy and politics in the first half of the 19th century brought about tremendous changes in the current situation. Hawthorne was antagonistic to the development of production and technological progress and was suspicious of the various reform and feminist movements of that time Attitude, expressed the ignorance of the vigorous anti-slavery campaign.
