Recently, researchers at the University of Iowa in the United States reported that invasive melanoma supplies itself with a network of tubing that does not have endothelial cell liners. The authors view the formation of this tube as “angiogenesis-like” to show that the process involves the re-formation of blood vessels, rather than the angiogenesis of new capillaries divided from the existing blood vessels. The study findings suggest that inhibitors of angiogenesis are unlikely to prevent the growth of all tumors. In the study at Iowa University, lead author Andrew Maniotis recapitulated the pathology with three-dimensional concepts.
