In the first half of 2002, I went to the Needham Institute in Cambridge, UK for a six-month visiting scholar. At Cambridge, when I had some thoughts and time, I wrote some related words, took some photos and handed them to some of my friends in the country. After I returned to China, I wrote a few articles based on my memory. At the invitation of World Knowledge magazine, I will publish several articles here. This is the origin of the column “British academic travels.” I do not want to write these words as ordinary travel records, or repeat what has been said many times by others. The way I choose is to stand in an academic context and to look, think, and write my own impressions and feelings from a specific perspective. And an important criterion of choice is that what is written And records, at least in an indirect sense, reflect a more or less weak link with the broader academic culture, especially with regard to science and culture.
