In the United States, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women. Half of those who die are over 65 years of age. The other half of older women still need medical care, including breast reconstruction. To elucidate the impact of age on post-mastectomy reconstruction, the Breast Disease Center at the University of Michigan analysed 242 cases of breast reconstruction after breast resection performed from 1980 to 1991, with regard to age, reconstruction time and type of surgery, and complications. And the number of required surgeries was analyzed. 224 cases were younger than 60 years old, with a median of 44 years (27-59 years old); 18 cases were ≥60 years old, and the largest was 68 years old. Of the 18 elderly women, 3 were delayed.
