New research shows that licorice may become an allied force against the acute severe respiratory syndrome (SARS). At least in the laboratory, this plant’s root extract can block the growth of SARS virus in cells. The virologist JindrichCinatl and his colleagues at the University of Frankfurt School of Medicine in Germany found that high doses of licorice extract called glycyrrhizin can remove the SARS virus from infected monkey cells.
