In England in the thirteenth century,bakers had a bad reputation for sellingunderweight bread. Strict laws were passedin 1266 with heavy penalties if the weightof a baker’s bread was insufficient1 .Butusing the equipment available at the time,it was difficult to make all the loaves thesame size2. So bakers began giving an extraloaf of bread with every dozen (twelve)loaves a person bought. Thirteen thenbecame known as a baker’s dozen.
