Two scientists from the United States won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for their discovery of the mechanism of cholesterol metabolism in 1985. On October 14, 1985, the Nobel Prize Committee of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, announced that Brown, of the University of Texas, The discovery of two doctors, Michael S. Brown and Joseph L. Goldstein, has revolutionized understanding of cholesterol metabolism and has led to dramatic improvements in the treatment of diseases caused by hypercholesterolemia. Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death in the United States and most of the developed world. It is associated with a number of environmental factors, including high saturated fat and high cholesterol diets.
