抗日战争胜利前夕,根据党中央指示,我东江纵队五支队等部队,挺进粤北。准备与王震、王首道率领的南下支队会师,创建五岭根据地。1945年9月9日,在始兴县下北山的奇心洞,隐蔽着重伤病员30多人,突然遭到国民党160师的袭击。短枪队队长王育南率领10余名武装战士奋起抵抗,终因寡不敌众,全部壮烈牺牲。伤病员大部分被反动派杀害。这就是国民党反动派制造的“奇心洞事件”。
