Objective To investigate the import of bulk scrap metal raw materials and their marine media organisms and to provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of vector borne diseases. Methods According to the “Regulations on Biological Surveillance of Medical Vehicles at Border Crossing and Entry and Exit Vehicles”, 210 batches of bulk scrap metal raw materials and 767 ships of scrap metal raw materials were selected for medical vector bio-survey and the survey data were statistically analyzed. Results The medical media organisms were not intercepted in the imported raw materials of scrap metal. The number of medical media found in carrying ships was 107 and the positive rate was 13.95%. Two kinds of flies were found in 103 ships (13.42%), of which 1 174 were found. A total of 265 cockroaches were found on the vessels, with a positive rate of 0.52%. Rats, mosquitoes and fleas were not found. Conclusions It is difficult to detect the presence of medical media imported from bulk scrap metal using conventional media monitoring methods. Ships carrying bulk scrap metal raw materials have a high carrying rate of medical vectors and need to step up their sanitary and quarantine work on such ships.
