In December 2012, Airbus officially launched a new generation of shark fin winglets designed to enhance the environmental performance of the A320 family of aircraft and extend their payload range. As an optional device for the new A320, the shark fin has reduced fuel consumption by 4% for the A320 family aircraft since 2012 and correspondingly reduced 900 tons of carbon dioxide per aircraft per year.
