The Northern Song Dynasty scholar Liu Chang was regarded as an important guide to the study of ancient scriptures. However, his theory of “scholarly nature and heavenly nature” was not described in his works. Liu Chang explained the categories of sex, benevolence, sanctity, morality, reason and medium in Annotations of Confucian Analects and made a meaningful exploration of Confucian moral metaphysics. Although it did not establish a sophisticated theoretical system, and there was a refutation of Confucianism and Confucianism, Liu Chang’s thought did indeed have a catalytic effect on the evolution of Neo-Confucianism and showed the positive significance of the turning of Confucian classics in the early Northern Song Dynasty for Neo-Confucianism.
