科技文献是反映人类认识活动成果的一种最有效的形式,是最为重要的情报资源,亦是社会进步和发展的真实记录。目前,情报源有如汹涌的波涛,滚滚而来:全世界不到1分钟就有1本书出版,每小时有15～20件专利在申请,每天有3～5种新的期刊出刊,每年有500万篇科技论文发表。信息是按每分钟一亿个单元增长,出版物是按每分钟2000个印张在增长。除传统的印刷型外,还有数以吨计的缩微、视听型文献,以及日渐增多的数据库、光盘等。
