In 1950, the Tokyo Gallery was established in Ginza, Japan’s first gallery of contemporary art. It introduced several contemporary Western avant-garde artists to Japan, such as Lucio Fontana and Jackson Polloc. While the Japanese “Gutai” and “Mono-ha” artists were still unknown, the Tokyo gallery supported them in their work. Since the 1970s, Tokyo Gallery has focused on contemporary Korean art and has been involved in contemporary Chinese art since the latter half of the 1980s. In Tokyo Gallery in 2002, BTAP was established as “Beijing Tokyo Art Project”. With its long tradition and contemporary vision, the Tokyo Gallery aims to promote the contemporary art of Japan, China and South Korea to international standards. This time, we talked about the topic of “promoting overseas art in China.” In particular, we interviewed Tian Tien, the art director of “Beijing Tokyo Art Project”.
