作种用的毛桃,应在充分成熟时的8月中、下旬采收,不宜过早。过早,种子成熟度差,种胚发育不完全,发芽率低,出苗不整齐,苗木生长不良,抗逆性弱。 毛桃采摘回来后,应将其堆放在阴凉的泥土地面沤烂果肉。堆积的厚度以20～30厘米为宜,过厚则常因果肉腐烂发酵温度上升至30℃以上而烧伤种子,使种子丧失发芽力。上堆后,可洒适量清水,薄盖一层湿稻草或一层塑料薄膜,每隔三、四天翻动一次,使之均匀腐烂。待果肉腐烂后,盛于竹筐里,浸于流动的河水中,用木棒揉捣,洗净果皮、果肉及其它杂物。
