湖北省京剧团成立于1970年9月,原是一个既无著名演员,也无著名编导,在社会上也无知名度的三无剧团,然而这却是一个有理想、有追求,勇于开拓的剧团。他们在继承传统的同时,努力探索具有现代审美意识的革新路子,十一届三中全会以来,在出作品、出人材等方面取得可喜成就,其中创作演出的现代京剧《一包蜜》,1979年进京参加文化部举办的国庆三十周年献礼演出,获得创作一等奖;古代喜剧《徐九经升官记》。1981年进京汇报演出,获全国优秀剧本奖;现代京剧《药王庙传奇》,1984年参加文化部举办的全国现代题材戏曲、话剧、歌剧观摩演出,荣获戏曲剧本、演出、导演、主演一等奖;近代悲喜剧《膏药章》,1988年参加文化部主办的京剧新剧
