石油行业是一个传统的行业,也是国民经济的支柱产业。中国的石油行业信息化建设起步较早,是我国最早大规模应用计算机的行业之一。该行业早期的计算机应用主要集中在业务生产领域,石油资源的勘探分析、地质资料解释等涉及大量数据处理领域。随着中国经济的高速发展对能源的需求将会日益增加,由此引发了全行业对高性能服务器的需求。据国外石油公司的分析显示,决策失误占整个勘探开发成本的15%～50%,一般为25%～30%。研究表明,1995年全球上市石油公司勘探开发支出600亿美元,有可能浪费150多亿美元,另据估计,80年代地震和测井数据总量年均1000TB,90年代达5000TB,20世纪末达10000TB。可见,石油行业对高计算能力服务器和存储产品的需求将非常大。
