Ambassador Jargalsaikhany Enkhsaikhan interviewed by our editorial About Mongolia’s nuclear-weapon-free zone Q: What is the origin of the Mongolian Nuclear Weapon Free Zone initiative? Jargalsaikhany Enkhsaikhan A: In the late 1960s, the two armed countries of the Soviet Union and China almost broke out in an all-out conflict. Mongolia, stationed in the Soviet military base, is helplessly caught in the middle. Bearing in mind its unique geographical location, one of the first independent foreign policy moves taken by Mongolia after the socialist system ended in the early 1990s was to ensure that its threat no longer felt during the Sino-Soviet dispute. In September 1992, it declared its region a nuclear-weapon-free zone and promised to give that status an international guarantee.
