In the early 20th century, a new theory of literature and art emerged. This is a new criticism from Britain and the United States. Like Russian formalism, the new Anglo-American criticism is an important part of textual criticism, emphasizing the criticism of the text of the work. The study of literary tension is the most important contribution to the new criticism of aesthetics by Britain and the United States. “New Criticism” was named after Lanserm’s New Criticism in 1941. Lanserm think metaphysical poetry best reflect the characteristics of the new criticism. John Donne is a typical representative of metaphysical poets.
