A reliable and convenient non-destructive method for monitoring the quality of backfill materials behind tunnel-assembled linings has been successfully developed, tested in the tunnel field and laboratory and used in the Hallandsas project, considered by the Swedish Ministry of Transport as being Breakthrough technology development, in line with the award-winning conditions. 1 Background In the Hallandsas project, there is pressured groundwater that needs to be drained and the lining design is extremely complicated. Based on numerical simulations, tunnel field tests and laboratory tests showed that the resonance frequency (fr) and associated increase (Q) measured using the IE-Impact Echo method can be directly related to the quality of the backfill material
