2008年经国务院批准公布的第一批《国家珍贵古籍名录》、2009年经江苏省人民政府批准公布的第一批《江苏省珍贵古籍名录》,都披露了宋刻《字苑类编》一书。这部书既不知编撰人,又不见书目著录和文献记载,极为罕见。南京图书馆的申报材料将之著录为:“《字苑类编》□卷,存十卷(卷上一至十),宋刻本。框高19.4、宽13.2厘米。每半叶十行,行十八字,小字双同,黑口,四周双边。”并称:“此书不见于宋代各书目记载,且《中国古籍善本书目》亦无著录。
