我国古代很重视行道树的栽植。周代有野庐氏的官职管理驰道两旁的树木。春秋战国时,曾把行道树栽培管理的好坏,视为一个国家盛衰的标志之一。 秦统一后,曾命令道旁植树,所谓“秦为驰道于天下,道广五十步,三丈为树……树以青松”,即是。 《汉宫解诂》里说:“列树以表道”,这就是说种植行道树是为道路作标记的。这里有两层意思:一是人们可据松树的棵数来判断里程;二是古时地旷人稀,修筑的驰道又无人保养,常被路边的杂草掩蔽,为了使行人不误入歧途,种上行道树,行人就可借此为路
