清代有一套独特的选秀女制度,每三年选一次,入选的都是满洲八旗女子,汉女则不得入选。清廷规定,凡是年龄13—17岁的八旗满籍少女,都须按年向户部具呈备案,入选秀女时则送进后宫,供皇帝、太后、皇后挑选。清代京师和各地参选的女子,都要在规定时间前聚集宫城北门神武门,按年龄顺序分批排班,然后由太监引领,过顺贞门,由帝后选看。当选的秀女,有的成为皇帝的妃嫔,有的则指配亲王、郡王、皇子、皇孙,其他的则值役宫廷。
