达尔文在《物种起源》中曾感叹啄木鸟身体构造的巧妙,他写到:“啄木鸟攀登树木并从树皮的裂缝里捉捕虫子,我们能够举出比这种适应性更加动人的例子吗?”“啄木鸟的脚、尾、喙和舌是如此令人赞叹地适应了从树皮之下捕捉虫子,将这样的构造也仅仅归于外部条件,则是十分荒谬的。”而实际上,啄木鸟的身体构造比达尔文设想的甚至还要精巧得多,他没有想到,啄木鸟的头部和眼睛的构造同样令人赞叹地适应了从树皮之下捕捉虫子这一自然行为。啄木鸟好比一个锤子,不停地快速敲打坚硬的树木,不仅通过啄木觅食,而且靠它在树干中挖洞建巢,还要靠它相互通信和示威。
Darwin, in The Origin of Species, lamented the ingenuity of the woodpecker’s body structure. It’s ridiculous to think that such a structure is only due to external conditions." The body structure of the woodpecker was even more subtle than Darwin had imagined. He did not expect that the construction of the head and eye of the woodpecker was also amazingly adapted to the natural behavior of capturing bugs from under the bark. The woodpecker is like a hammer and is constantly hammering hard trees, not only to feed through the coffin, but also to build nests by digging it in the trunk, but also to communicate with each other and demonstrate.
