志高七十二点二厘米,宽七十二点五厘米。志文凡二十九行,满行二十九字,共计七百九十八字,隶书。志主为北魏皇族,姓元名鉴,为区别另一《元鉴墓志》,故以志主之字称。史载,北魏末年战乱迭起,北魏孝昌三年(五二七),元长文在讨贼途中反戈,战败,被魏孝明帝所杀,并被革去元姓。魏孝庄帝继位后,元长文复姓复爵。此后四年,北魏灭亡。直到北齐天保八年(五五七),元长文被迁葬,才有了这块墓志。
