广西民族学院图书馆现有线装图书2,278种,34,421册,排有卡片式分类目录和书名目录各一套。分类目录卡片三盒,按四部分类法排列;书名目录卡片三盒,按起笔笔形号码排列。过去,不论是通过分类目录,还是通过书名目录来检查,都得在有关的类目、有关的部分一张张卡片翻检,如果所要查检的卡片没有,只有把有关类目或有关部分的卡片全部翻完,花费时间不少。用什么方法可以缩短查检时间呢?用书名首字起笔笔形号码查检就可以缩短时间。这种索引这样编制:
