中国先民的宗教活动是从人们的饮食活动中发展起来的。早期的宗教仪式主要是祭祀,而祭祀总是同人类的某种祈求心理分不开的,这种祈求又是以奉献饮食的形式反映出来。《诗经·楚茨》云:“芬孝祀,神嗜饮食。卜尔百福,如几如式。”中国古代的祭祀,无论是大祭或薄祭,都是以最好的食物侍之。饮食不仅促进了宗教信仰的发展,反过来,宗教的发展也为人们信仰食俗的形成产生过重大的影响。就汉唐时期的信仰食俗而言,主要表现为佛教和道教信仰食俗的形成,它们对汉唐时期的饮食生活都发挥了较大的影响
