小米草是湖北省科委和湖北省水产局一九八三年从澳大利亚引进的一种优质牧草,是畜、禽、鱼类的优质饲料。一九八四年用22.5克种籽进行试种,当年一季收种籽六公斤,一九八五年继续进行试验,收种籽一千公斤,增长指数为100至300倍,最高可达500倍,是青饲料中增长指数最高的一种品种。具有以下优点: 一、营养物质含量高。其干物质的粗蛋白含量为22.5%,氨基酸含量为13.9%,其中赖氨酸和蛋氨酸含量分别高出苏丹草和红三叶30—2000%。收取种子后的枯草粗蛋白的含量达3.19%。
